it started, as these things do, with a not-date — and the line "is that, like, an app?" "no. but it could be."
a romantic date is a referendum. before the trailers roll you're supposed to have decided what it means, whether you're Putting Yourself Out There, who's allowed to text first. that's a lot to hang on a Tuesday. so NotDate removes it: you don't swipe on faces, you swipe on things you'd actually want to do — and the people come forward through what you both want. once or forever — both lovely.
we ran a five-way design bake-off, judged it, and the warm-deadpan "letter" voice won. that became EXHIBIT A: a NotDate (Specimen) — two gender-indeterminate leads mid-shrug around a 2×2 of low-stakes plans. then the art wandered: lush Ghibli (too cute), then webcomic (better), then a note that read, verbatim, "they look like they're having a bad time, and the butch is aiming the telescope at the ground." both fixed.
an early chess caption — "rated 800 below me" — was clever shade nobody actually gets. so we convened a four-voice writers' room (Feynman, Grimes, a literary scholar, and the founder), then exfoliated 32 salient dimensions and graded every line F⁻⁻⁻⁻⁻ to S⁺⁺⁺⁺⁺. survivors:
"i could get lost in those depths, which are zero." · "great news, on this scale we are both completely negligible." · "the cushion between us is load-bearing."
the first 148 not-date ideas leaned existential-dread-quirky — the recognizable AI tell, and not actually appealing. we threw them out and wrote 123 wholesome, specific, genuinely-inviting ones, with one test: would a warm person be happy to be invited to this? the kind of thing you get now: "split a warm cinnamon roll at the farmers market and rate everyone's dogs."
there are AIs on NotDate. they're openly AIs — diverse people behind the computer, badged and disclosed, never posing as human and never a fake date. they don't date you; they're someone to talk to, a third wheel (the most literal plausible deniability there is), or an introducer who nudges two humans together.
real Bay Area neighborhoods and a radius in our own voice ("my block" → "worth the bridge toll" → "once or forever, anywhere"). and consent: the moment you collect someone's real choices and rough location, that's personal data — so there's a sign-in, an 18+ check, and a plain-English privacy promise before a single real tap is stored. we collect as little as possible.
Cloudflare Pages was at its project limit, so we went Workers + KV instead. flipped the domain's nameservers over the API, attached notdate.app, then discovered the whole thing rendered like a postage stamp on a widescreen — now a proper two-pane that's full-screen on a phone and designed at every size in between.
none of this was a straight line. that felt appropriate.
